Roanoke Valley Therapeutic Riding Program

February 2004: Lawrence Barger, long time supporter and friend of our charity passed away and we made our 1st annual donation in his memory to the Roanoke Valley Therapeutic Riding Program. This program uses horses to aid in helping to make handicapped kids physically stronger, while at the same time building their confidence.

"Take a Kid To Kings Dominion" bus trip. On our 3rd annual event, we left Roanoke on June 6 for a day of "fun in the sun" at Kings Dominion - a theme park located in Doswell, Va (just North of Richmond)  Thanks to the MANY drivers and listeners to the OPEN ROAD on XM 171 for helping to "pay the freight" and make this trip possible again this year.  The bus was SOLD OUT with 45 kids aboard!!!  Thanks to the many volunteers who helped make this possible!  45 kids loaded up on a Abbott Bus and off we went to enjoy a day of riding roller coasters, swings, bumper cars and everything else the park offered! Snacks were served for the morning and then bags lunches were served on the way home. Thanks to Wendy Ramsuer for providing the lunches!

3rd Annual "Summer Splash with Slam - Emerald Pointe Water Park on Monday, August 9, 2004

Another day of fun in the sun and water rides! The kids enjoyed a movie on the trip down and kept asking how much farther. Slam and the 30 kids rode all kinds of water rides and even ended up in the wave pool while Linda held onto the towels and flip-flops underneath a shade tree – smart lady! On the trip home the kids shared their stories with each other while enjoying their sandwiches and drinks that, by the way, were made fresh by Slam and Linda themselves – it was all Linda could do to keep Slam from eating every other sandwiches they made!!  Click here  for photos from this fantastic event

Misc. Events

August 2004: A mother contacted the charity to ask for help with getting her 7 year old son school supplies for the new year. We were more than happy to pay a visit to the local Wal Mart and pick out a new backpack and all the supplies needed for him to be ready to face the 1st grade!

2nd Annual Help Us....Help Kids!  A Car and Truck show was held October 23, 2004 from 10am - 3pm at Tanglewood Mall.  This event is Co-Sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Volkswagen Club.  Dash Plaques were given to the first 100 entries.  There were two $50.00 door prizes drawn from those entries who are pre-registered.   To view pictures from this event, click here

We raised approximately $1400.00!
Thanks to all who attended and assisted in any way.

Monday, December 13th  at Wal Mart. The kids  each got to choose an angel off the tree and then go out into the store and shop for that child. Each angel is for a boy or girl and has the sizes and things that child wants. Then they brought the packages back to us and we will wrapped them for the kids.

We felt like this would be a way for the kids to help and at the same time feel the joy of helping another child.   To view photos from this event, click here

Our "Angels Helping Angels" Christmas program raised 70 individual gifts for 32 angels picked off the Angel Tree. The angels were provided to us by the Salvation Army of the Roanoke Valley.

THANKS again to those of you, who through your donations to Slam Duncan's Children's Charity, made all this possible.
YOU
too are
ANGELS!!
